Hal Kane is a consultant and author who has worked as an executive director, a strategic planning consultant, a speechwriter and ghostwriter, and a public policy analyst. He has been executive director of an organization that protects the environment of the Pacific Rim by helping citizens' organizations in Siberia, China, and other places where there was previously little tradition of civic society. He has also directed a program to challenge traditional economic indicators, like the gross domestic product, as measures of well-being and to establish new measures that include social and environmental values more fully. He has published very extensively, and has delivered speeches around the world, spoken frequently on the radio, and appeared on television occasionally. Mr. Kane holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) in International Economics, and a B.A. from the University of Michigan in English Language and Literature. He has been biographied as one of the 350 most influential environmentalists of all time in the United States by the new book American Environmental Leaders: From Colonial Times to the Present, a Biographical Dictionary.
